Taiwan shuts down as Typhoon Champi kills one person, injures 170 and grounds nearly 1,000 flights

The victim was swept into the sea by massive waves off Liuqiu Island near Kaohsiung, while most of the 170 injured suffered wounds from toppling trees and wind-hurled debris. Floodwaters have reached more than 19 feet, and no fewer than 1,747 residents have abandoned their homes. Forecaster Liu Pei-teng says a direct hit remains possible should the storm 'stalls, loops, or wobbles'. Rainfall totals of up to 90cm are expected through Saturday.

Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai urged people to stay away from rivers, mountains and beaches.

Japan Airlines and ANA grounded at least 100 flights, hitting around 11,000 passengers.
