Joseph Wu, secretary-general of Taiwan's National Security Council, published a map on X showing 53 Chinese vessels operating across the region, warning that the danger to all three nations is plain to see. The Liaoning carrier strike group is positioned east of the Philippines, with further formations off Taiwan's east and southeast coasts. Taiwan's defence minister Wellington Koo said Taipei is "not happy to see any attempt to project deterrence that could undermine peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region."
China's defence ministry insists the Liaoning is on a routine training exercise "not directed at any specific country."
Japan tracked three Chinese warships and a Coast Guard ship passing through the narrow Osumi Strait off Kyushu before entering the Pacific.
Beijing has never renounced force to bring Taiwan under its control, though it says it prefers "peaceful reunification."
