Teacher is jailed for 5 years after pleading guilty to sexually abusing student whose baby she had

Laura Caron, a 36-year-old fifth-grade teacher and basketball coach at Middle Township Elementary School in New Jersey, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a student across a four-year period beginning in 2016, when he was just 11 years old, and in 2019 — when he was 13 — giving birth to his child. The abuse came to light in December 2024 after the victim's father noticed a striking facial resemblance in a Facebook photo between his son and Caron's daughter, prompting DNA tests that confirmed parentage. Sentencing had been scheduled for 8 January 2027, pending an evaluation to determine whether her conduct is classified as repetitive or compulsive — a finding that could push her sentence beyond five years.
The now-21-year-old victim has defended Caron, saying 'I started everything' and calling for all charges to be dropped.
Caron must also register on the Megan's Law sex offender registry and will face parole supervision for life after her release.
Prosecutors say that during the years Caron lived full-time in the family home, the victim's brother walked in on her sexually assaulting his sibling while he slept.
