Teacher wrestled shooter's gun before armed dad Kaylub Giamanco shot him dead inside Oregon special needs class
A brave teacher threw her phone at 16-year-old gunman Griffin J. John II, then tackled him to the ground and fought him for his shotgun inside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, while three children and a teacher lay dead around her. Kaylub Giamanco, 36, a carpenter and father of two girls at the school, smashed through a shot-out window and opened fire with his .40-calibre pistol, killing John — who still had 44 rounds left. Police chief Mike Krantz said both acts of courage "almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed." The victims include five-year-old Rhoam Summer and teacher Meghan Lambert, 25, described by her family as someone who "always fought for the underdog."
John, a former Silver Rail pupil with special needs, used a shotgun his mother had bought and fired at least 15 rounds at the class before being stopped.
Seven-year-old Saylor Graham, a wheelchair user, was shot in the face and remains in serious but stable condition; teacher Becky Drury, 54, sustained gunshot wounds to both arms but is expected to survive.
Giamanco's mother Kenda Freeman said he rang her straight after the shooting: 'He said, "Mom, I just shot and killed somebody" — a man went into my daughter's school and shot kids.'
