Team GB sprinter Matt Richardson is sent home from Shanghai World Championships amid misconduct investigation

Matt Richardson, one of Britain's strongest medal hopes for next week's Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, has been withdrawn from the squad following serious misconduct allegations, among them reported slurs aimed at people from minority backgrounds and remarks in which he made light of his use of the N-word. British Cycling confirmed his removal but offered no reasons and declined to comment on any investigation. Attempts to contact Richardson were unsuccessful, and he has reportedly already left China.
Richardson, 27, had won two European titles this year and was expected to contend for medals in the team sprint, individual sprint and keirin events in Shanghai.
Born in Kent, Richardson controversially switched allegiances from Australia to Great Britain after the Paris 2024 Olympics, a move that caused a serious rupture within the sport.
His partner, three-time world champion Emma Finucane, remains with the British squad in Shanghai.
