Teen, 19, died days after her birthday after her 10lb tumour was dismissed as 'hormone problems'
Hannah York says her daughter Liberty was told it was "highly unlikely" she had cancer as doctors repeatedly mistook her symptoms for mastitis, an abscess, and hormonal problems. By the time angiosarcoma was finally diagnosed, the aggressive soft-tissue tumour weighed 10lb and had already spread to Liberty's lymph nodes — and no specialist hospital beds were available. Hannah, 41, a store assistant from Stratford-upon-Avon, has now backed a new campaign to stop young cancer patients slipping through the net.
Liberty's tumour spread to her lungs in just six weeks after surgery, and she died at home in the early hours of June 1 last year.
Hannah said: 'It just baffles me how they can have something so huge and don't rule out the most serious thing.'
Her cancer, angiosarcoma, is rare, underfunded and under-researched — doctors told the family they 'see it every day' blamed on hormones.
