Pauline Parker, who lived out her final years as Hilary Nathan in retirement housing in St Margaret's Hope, Orkney, died this month, with her death registered in Kirkwall. In 1954, the 16-year-old and her closest friend Juliet Hulme, 15, killed Honora Reiper in Christchurch, New Zealand, beating her to death with a half-brick wrapped in a stocking. After serving just five years each, both women were released under new identities and eventually settled in Scotland.

Hulme reinvented herself as crime novelist Anne Perry and died in 2023.

A 2011 book exposed Parker's secret Orkney life and Hulme's home in Portmahomack.

Peter Jackson's 1994 film gave Winslet her first major role, with Melanie Lynskey as Parker.
