Ten anti-war protesters, including a woman of 94, are arrested after chaining themselves to a car at RAF Lakenheath
Organised by No More Bloody Wars and the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace, the group reached the main entrance to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk just before 7am on Monday, partly blocking the A1065 Brandon Road. They were calling for US military bases in the UK to be shut down, an end to what they described as illegal wars, and the removal of US nuclear weapons from British soil. Nine were taken to Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre; a tenth was bailed.
RAF Lakenheath hosts the US's biggest fighter wing in the UK, including F-35A jets cleared to carry the B61-12 thermonuclear weapon.
Protesters allege that during the recent Iran conflict over 170 aircraft flew sorties out of Lakenheath, two of which were reportedly shot down.
Margaret Owen, the 94-year-old human rights lawyer among those arrested, called it 'a wonderful opportunity to stand against the war machines that are destroying millions of lives.'
