Two men in their 30s were arrested on Newton Street in Manchester on Sunday — just before Yom Kippur — on suspicion of offences under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, as counter-terrorism police disrupted what they believe was a plot to attack the city's Jewish community. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans confirmed it followed a "long-running proactive investigation" and that the suspects had travelled from outside the Manchester area. The Community Security Trust called the plot "utterly chilling", noting it came close to the anniversary of last year's terror attack at Heaton Park Synagogue, also on Yom Kippur.
The plot was timed to coincide with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, running from Sunday to Monday.
Evans said police 'will not hesitate to investigate and take action' wherever they suspect a threat to the public.
The CST urged the Jewish community to 'remain calm and alert' and report suspicious activity immediately to police.
