TfL rolls out virtual reality headsets at eight Tube stations after hate crime rises 36% on the network

Hate crime on London's transport network has surged 36% in a single year, with 2,396 offences recorded between January and August 2026, prompting TfL to deploy virtual reality headsets at eight Underground and Overground stations during National Hate Crime Awareness Week. The VR sessions put passengers in a bystander's shoes, showing them how to safely intervene when they witness an attack. TfL says improved reporting and international events are partly behind the rise, though the overall crime rate on the network remains 14.2 incidents per million journeys.
Stations hosting the VR drop-ins include Stratford, Liverpool Street, Euston, Victoria, Golders Green, Finsbury Park, Stamford Hill and Harrow-on-the-Hill.
Six free online bystander training sessions, delivered by charity Protection Approaches, are also available to book via Eventbrite throughout autumn and winter.
Deputy Mayor Kaya Comer-Schwartz confirmed City Hall has invested £17m to tackle hate crime across London.
