Police commissioner to write to Justice Secretary demanding clarity over Kiran Kaur's early release around anniversary of Henry Nowak's murder
Henry Nowak, the Southampton University student whose killer's mother is expected to walk free under Labour's early release scheme having served less than half her three-year sentence.Kiran Kaur, the mother of Henry Nowak's killer, who faces deportation to India and a Court of Appeal challenge to her sentence on 5 November, weeks before her scheduled early release.
Donna Jones, Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, has declared it 'not right' that Kiran Kaur be freed early, warning the move would be 'a significant blow' to Henry Nowak's family. Kaur, 53, was sentenced in July to three years in prison after she disposed of the knife her son Vickrum Digwa had used to fatally stab 18-year-old student Henry Nowak in Southampton last December. Jones told the BBC's Today programme the case raises 'very serious questions about the robustness of our criminal justice system'. With the sentence handed down only three months ago, Labour's early release scheme could see Kaur walk free around the time the first anniversary of the murder falls.
Kaur, an Indian national, also faces possible deportation, with the Home Office signalling it will 'seek to deport foreign criminals at the first opportunity.'
Kaur is simultaneously appealing her sentence at the Court of Appeal on November 5 — the same day her son Digwa challenges his life sentence as too severe.
Digwa, who falsely claimed Nowak had carried out a racist attack against him, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 21 years.
