More than half of the buyers, 55 per cent, were under 35. They stormed a virtual queue when the British Museum's second ticket release opened at 10am last Wednesday. Monzo cardholders spent £14,100 in the first hour, 48 times a normal Wednesday morning. The total hit £30,500 within two hours, and the second batch sold out in under three.

Buyers averaged £97 at the checkout, against just £19 on Spider-Man's opening morning.

Two hours of tapestry sales beat a Saturday night at Koko, Fabric and four other clubs.

One TikTok user called the scramble 'history nerd ticket hunger games'.
