The M25, Britain's 'most hated road', turns 40 as a quarter of van drivers say its jams cost them work

The M25 motorway marks its 40th anniversary today, though few are celebrating: new data from vehicle tracking firm Geotab reveals the worst stretch — clockwise from junction 14 to 15 near the M4 — averages 9.2 minutes at 4pm against just three minutes at 7pm, more than three times slower. All eight of the most congested sections fall between junctions 10 and 20, clustered around the M3, M4 and M40 interchanges near Heathrow. The survey of 1,000 South East van drivers found three in ten have faced customer complaints and 29 per cent report higher fuel costs from delays.

Despite the misery, 84 per cent of van drivers said their businesses couldn't operate as effectively without it.
