Brandon Rainey, 30, formerly of James Street, Ballymena, is on trial at Belfast Crown Court accused of murdering Chloe Mitchell, 21, in the early hours of 3 June 2023 and dismembering her body to conceal the crime. Prosecution barrister David Russell KC described it to the jury as a "cruel and brutal death" and said Rainey "clearly intended to kill her."
Rainey also attempted to order "amputation knives" online from surgical companies, the court heard.
The court was told Rainey had a fascination with Jack the Ripper and told police a "catalogue of lies" after Mitchell disappeared.
Mitchell's dismembered remains were recovered on 11 June from two bins on James Street; post-mortem examination established that she had suffered head injuries caused by blunt force and chest wounds from stabbing.
