FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, 25, from Equatorial Guinea, broke his silence on Wednesday after Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, 30, died in hospital following the on-pitch collision, with Owono vowing to "face whatever comes with the utmost respect." De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest after Owono's knee struck him in the chest near the halfway line during their Spanish second-division match on Monday; police have opened a routine involuntary manslaughter investigation, though criminal proceedings are considered unlikely.
De Miguel, known as 'Demi', is survived by his wife and a daughter born in 2025; the entire Tenerife squad is travelling to his funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo, on Thursday.
Owono deleted his Instagram account after facing racist abuse and chants of 'murderer'; team-mate Lautaro Spatz said he "is suffering" and "would never have intended to harm anyone."
Questions have emerged over the emergency medical treatment De Miguel received on the pitch, adding another dimension to the investigation.
