Essex Police shut both the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and the eastbound Dartford Tunnel shortly before midday, leaving drivers trapped in standstill traffic stretching back miles across the M25 into Kent and Essex. National Highways warned no timescale exists for reopening, with the westbound tunnel now the only crossing point, limited to vehicles under 4'8".

The AA measured average speeds of just 5mph, reporting 43-minute delays between junction 29 and the Dartford Crossing.

Gridlock has spread beyond the M25, with cars stationary on the A13 towards Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock and near junction J3 with the M20.
