Britain is heading into a warm, dry spell this weekend, with temperatures expected to reach 23C in some areas before a sharp autumnal drop mid-next-week. The Met Office says high pressure over southern England will bring mostly clear skies and sunshine through the early part of October. Last month's mercury ran around 2.6C above normal for the year to date, and forecasters say October is so far continuing that trend.

London should see sunshine and peaks of 22C over the weekend, with much the same weather holding into Monday and Tuesday.

Temperatures are forecast to fall sharply to 17C by Wednesday, with a further drop expected on Thursday as autumn finally bites.
