Labour-linked think tank claims skilled migrants are worth £115bn as Mahmood prepares to water down her migrant crackdown

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to announce a significant climbdown on her immigration reforms in a Commons statement on Monday afternoon, after strident opposition from senior Cabinet colleagues forced a rewrite of her original plans. Foreign care workers already living in the UK are reportedly exempt from the extended settlement wait. Mahmood herself warned that diluting the reforms would cost taxpayers £10bn and be 'an affront to the idea of fairness within our society'.
Angela Rayner branded the original proposals 'un-British', while Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh refused to back them seven times in a Sky News interview.
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp accused Mahmood of being 'forced to surrender to Angela Rayner and the open-borders' wing of Labour.
The IPPR's £115bn net contribution figure uses the same methodology as the government's own £10bn lifetime cost estimate for care workers.
