'This delicate phase is behind me': Pope Leo tells cheering crowds he will 'gradually resume' duties after lung cancer surgery

About 15,000 worshippers chanted 'Viva il papa!' as Pope Leo XIV, 71, appeared unaided at the Apostolic Palace window to lead Sunday's Angelus. Four days earlier, surgeons at Rome's Gemelli Hospital removed the lower lobe of his right lung and confirmed adenocarcinoma. He left hospital on Saturday, earlier than the week-long stay first expected. Tests will now show whether he needs further treatment.

Doctors may consider chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted oral therapy, depending on the tumour's genetic profile.

Leo said the ordeal made him feel 'especially close to those facing illness and infirmity'.

President Donald Trump, despite months of friction with Leo, said: 'I want to see Pope Leo get well.'
