Thousands cheer students marching into Belgrade ahead of Sunday's showdown election against Serbian strongman Aleksandar Vucic

Aleksandar Vucic addressed thousands of flag-waving supporters in the southern city of Nis, declaring that his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party would emerge victorious. He pledged 'no more politics in schools and at faculties' and claimed students and professors were acting on foreign instructions. Polls show his party and the Students' List running even. Police have detained six people suspected of planning election-day unrest.

Belgrade residents lit flares to welcome students who had walked from across Serbia.

Vucic quit the presidency in September to run for prime minister.

Students' List candidate Ilija Srdanovic said: 'this energy is unstoppable.'
