Thousands of Christmas shoppers on Oxford Street will have their faces scanned by permanent Met facial recognition cameras

Liberty director Akiko Hart says shoppers will be scanned by 'unregulated surveillance technology without being given a choice'. Installation is planned for December, with the cameras likely mounted on lampposts to check every face that passes against a database of wanted suspects. The Met also plans static cameras across the West End and Soho. Ministers have still not set out the legal rules.

About half a million people pass through Oxford Street every day.

The Home Office has yet to answer a consultation that closed in February.

Hart warned the 'lack of transparency damages public trust' and called for a pause.
