Thousands of Indonesian students protest over the government's response as record-breaking fires choke Southeast Asia

More than 500 masked protesters massed outside the Central Kalimantan Governor's Office in Palangkaraya on Friday, under skies turned orange by smoke. Demonstrations have erupted in over half a dozen cities, including on Borneo, where fires still rage. Some demand that President Prabowo Subianto declare a national emergency. 'We're so angry,' said student Vincent Thomas. 'We want the officials responsible held accountable.'

Slash-and-burn farming is blamed for igniting the forest and peatland blazes behind the smog.

Singapore is now targeting companies over the haze drifting across its borders.

Anger over the smoke has fused with protests against Indonesia's struggling economy.
