Three children are taken to hospital after a double-decker school bus's roof is 'ripped off' in a Newport bridge crash
Gruff, 13, was sitting at the back of the top deck when the bus hit the railway bridge on Tregare Street at about 7.45am, and he was struck in the head with a pole. His mother, Jo Townsend, said: 'The whole top of the bus came off.' The bus was carrying pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed and St Julian's School. Lullabyz nursery opened its doors so paramedics could treat the injured.
Gruff told his mother 'it all went dark', then came screaming and 'metal scraping metal'.
Newport City Council said a formal investigation into the collision will follow.
Trains between Newport and Hereford faced delays of up to 60 minutes while the bridge was checked.
