Three men are sentenced to 158 years each for the murders of Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their US friend in Mexico
A Mexican judge has handed down sentences of more than 158 years each to three men convicted of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad during a 2024 surf trip to Baja California. The three were shot dead during an attempted robbery while camping near Ensenada, their bodies later found dumped in a cliff-top well with gunshot wounds to the head. The case drew global condemnation and exposed the dangers foreigners face in Mexico's tourist regions.
The judge ruled the three defendants — Jesus Gerardo, Irineo Francisco and Angel Jesus — acted with premeditation when they attacked the surfers on 27 April 2024.
The Robinsons' parents, Martin and Debra, attended the month-long trial and told the court: 'It's hard for a parent to lose a son, and we lost two sons.'
Carter Rhoad's fiancée Natalie Weirtz addressed the court by video link, calling for the accused to be punished so no other family suffers the same loss.
