Tom Skerritt, the US actor who starred in Top Gun, Alien and Mash, dies aged 93 of natural causes
Skerritt died on Wednesday, and his family said they were 'heartbroken by his loss'. He played Viper Metcalf in Top Gun and Dallas, the doomed captain of the Nostromo, in Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien, a film he first turned down because of its $2m budget. The Detroit-born Air Force veteran won an Emmy in 1993 for the TV drama Picket Fences. He has five children.
His breakout role was army surgeon Duke Forrest in Robert Altman's 1970 comedy Mash.
He once joked that Alien 'could have been directed by Ed Wood'.
He loved being described as 'a character actor locked in a leading man's body'.
