Top Vatican diplomat asks how Pope Leo's illness was discovered as Vatican silence over the timeline fuels scrutiny

Church experts want to know whether Pope Leo XIV already knew he was sick when he prayed at the healing grotto in Lourdes nearly three weeks ago. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni has refused to say when the lung adenocarcinoma was found or what caused it. Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican's British foreign minister, admits: 'I am concerned.' The 71-year-old had part of his right lung removed.

Gallagher called the news 'a bit of a game changer' after Francis's wheelchair years.

At Lourdes, Leo touched the rock wall, drank spring water and lit a candle.
