Tornado kills four workers at a construction site in Turkey's Antalya resort, weeks before it hosts the COP31 climate summit
Three of the four workers who died were Syrian nationals, killed when the tornado ripped through a construction site in the Kepez district, demolishing containers that labourers had taken shelter in and bringing down a crane. A fifth worker sustained injuries. District Governor Hulusi Sahin called the storm an 'exceptionally localised' phenomenon that hit shortly after weather agencies had issued heavy rain warnings.
Video captured the tornado as it took shape, with local residents watching in fear as it bore down on them, scattering trees and debris across the site.
Tornadoes strike Antalya from time to time, though fatalities are uncommon — Istanbul floods earlier this month killed eight in what officials called the worst flooding in 80 years.
The disaster comes just weeks before Antalya hosts COP31, the United Nations climate summit, casting a harsh light on Turkey's growing extreme-weather toll.
