Tornado linked to Storm Austen tears a mile-long path of 'devastation' through the Hampshire village of Portchester

Kevin Saunders said it 'felt like the roof was going to lift off' before a massive bang as his neighbour's wall collapsed. The twister carved a strip about 100m wide on the eastern edge of Fareham just after midnight on Friday. Sarah Horton of TORRO said rotating showers brought by Storm Austen caused it. TORRO rated it 'weak' but said further analysis will follow.

Saunders said the tornado lasted only '35 to 40 seconds' across about four houses.

Metal fences were flattened, trees were stripped, and his hot tub roof was 'completely gone'.

Portchester was hit before: a 2002 'mini tornado' damaged more than 100 properties.
