A 23-year-old tourist, believed to be from Eastern Europe, was beaten and stabbed twice in the neck during a violent altercation with three men at the five-star Hotel Casa Fuster on Passeig de Gràcia on Monday afternoon. The attackers fled before police reached the scene, and no arrests have followed. Investigators are going through CCTV footage from the hotel and surrounding streets; the victim is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The Casa Fuster is a landmark Modernist building in central Barcelona where a double room costs around £360 a night.

Just ten days ago, five masked men posing as police officers abducted a semi-naked victim on the AP-7 motorway near Barcelona, with horrified motorists looking on.
