Around a dozen trans rights activists gathered outside Harry Potter's new Oxford Street flagship on Wednesday, chanting that JK Rowling has "blood on her hands" as hundreds of fans queued for the grand opening. Occupying two floors and stretching across over 21,000 square feet, the store takes its design cues from Diagon Alley and is the UK's largest official Harry Potter retail destination. Actors Warwick Davis and Tom Felton were among the stars attending the launch.
Protesters carried placards reading 'Trans kids deserve to grow up — trans adults deserve to grow old' and urged fans in the queue not to visit.
The Oxford Street store is the second official retail site for the franchise, after the existing location at King's Cross Station.
The opening comes ahead of a new Harry Potter TV series next year, amid a proliferation of at least six unofficial Potter shops already trading in London's West End.
