Richard Baines was walking near his home at Mid Kelton, just outside Castle Douglas, when a tree struck him at around 10.30am on Sunday. David Knott of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh said colleagues were 'desperately sad, devastated'. Baines had worked at Logan Botanic Garden near Stranraer for 14 years. Police Scotland say there are no suspicious circumstances.
A man in his 20s also died when a tree crushed his car in Mill Hill.
Fieldwork that Baines led resulted in the discovery of seven plant species new to science.
Fresh yellow wind warnings cover much of Scotland until 9pm on Tuesday.
