Richard Baines, 60, was struck while walking near his home at Mid Kelton, outside Castle Douglas, at around 10.30am on Sunday and died at the scene. David Knott of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh said colleagues were 'desperately sad, devastated' and called him 'a very genuine and warm human being'. A man in his 20s lost his life when a tree fell on his car in Finchley, north London.
Baines led fieldwork in China, the Canary Islands and Vietnam, resulting in the discovery of seven plant species previously unknown to science.
He originated the phrase 'Scotland's most exotic garden', and Which? voted Logan the UK's best garden in 2021.
A fresh yellow wind warning covers much of Scotland from 3am until 9pm on Tuesday.
