Tributes are paid to 'passionate' flying instructor, 80, who was killed with his 16-year-old student near Loch Lomond

Tributes are paid to 'passionate' flying instructor, 80, who was killed with his 16-year-old student near Loch Lomond

The instructor has been named as Ian Haggis, affectionately known as 'the Flying Haggis', who once taught RAF Scholarship students. The boy is believed to have been on a flying lesson over the half-term break. Their 1981 Piper Tomahawk, registered to Leading Edge Flight Training in Renfrew, crashed in a field north of Drymen on Friday. One aviation insider called Mr Haggis 'very generous'.

The plane departed Glasgow Airport at 4.17pm, with its transponder going silent 20 minutes into the flight.

It had already flown to Newport on Tay and back earlier that day.

Air Accidents Investigation Branch teams are combing the wreckage while drones are banned overhead.
