Richard Baines had been curator of Logan Botanic Garden near Stranraer for 14 years. He was struck near Mid Kelton, outside Castle Douglas, at around 10:30am on Sunday and died at the scene. Hours later a driver in his 20s was killed when a tree crushed his moving car on Dollis Road in Mill Hill, north London. Fresh weather warnings have now been issued.
David Knott of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh said staff were 'desperately sad, devastated'.
Baines led fieldwork in China, Vietnam and the Canary Islands that yielded seven plants new to science.
He coined Logan's nickname, 'Scotland's most exotic garden'.
