President Trump and Melania Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday — the first occasion since 1962 on which a US president has personally received a foreign head of state at the base. A 30-metre red carpet was laid out, and two US Air Force B-1 Lancer bombers marked the event with a sonic boom flyover. Body language expert Dr Lillian Glass noted that both couples moved in unison, with Melania and Peng appearing "especially warm" toward each other. The visit is the second meeting between Trump and Xi this year, following Trump's trip to China in May.
The visit comes as Trump's approval ratings are weighed down by the Iran war and economic anxieties, with the midterms drawing closer.
Melania had earlier told Fox & Friends that Trump "doesn't always want to hear" her honest verdicts — but praised his UN speech delivery.
She described the president as working "from morning until evening nonstop," adding: "He has the most energy than anybody."
