President Trump declared on Truth Social that massive oil, gas and mineral exploration is getting ready to begin in Greenland, calling it "our new and beautiful Greenland" in a post that will reignite sovereignty tensions. Trump claimed experts say the island holds more easily available oil than almost anywhere else in the world. He also touted Greenland's strategic military value, arguing any future attack on the US would have to cross Greenland first.

Greenland stopped issuing new oil and gas exploration licences in 2021 over environmental concerns, making Trump's exploration boast far from straightforward.

The US, Denmark and Greenland signed a deal last month expanding US military access, paving the way for two new bases and Trump's 'Golden Dome' missile defence system.

Texas-based Greenland Energy is already vying to drill this winter near Mestersvig, a location overseeing the GIUK gap critical to containing Russia's naval reach into the Atlantic.
