US gas prices averaged $4.29 a gallon as Donald Trump boasted at a Georgia rally that America is making a "freaking fortune" from oil revenues despite advisers begging him not to.

President Donald Trump told a midterm rally in Perry, Georgia, that his own advisers begged him not to mention oil profits "because people are paying a little higher". American drivers now pay $4.29 a gallon, up from $3.06 a year ago. The Iran war is nearing its eighth month. Trump insisted prices are "temporarily high" and will fall "dramatically" once the war ends.

Reporter Ryan Grim said Trump used a "widdle baby voice" to mock drivers' complaints.

Democrat strategist David Axelrod wrote: "Not a great closing message, though."

California Governor Gavin Newsom congratulated "Big Oil" on its "record-profits presidency".
