Trump branded Canada "one of the worst countries in the entire world" after his ban on nearly $1 billion worth of Canadian alcohol, dairy and motorcycles came into force at 12:01am Tuesday. The president accused Ottawa of charging American farmers "400% tariffs and more" and claimed Canada has taken advantage of the US throughout his second term. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has not relented, instead declaring the era of deep US economic dependence "is over" and pushing for trade diversification.
The ban spans 68 tariff classifications — 53 of which cover alcoholic beverages including whisky, rum, gin and vodka — though bulk shipments and containers over four litres are exempt, meaning many consumers may not notice shortages immediately.
Canada matched earlier US tariffs dollar for dollar with levies of 15%, 25% or 50%, but further retaliation is not anticipated, with Carney describing Tuesday's ban as "relatively modest measures."
US trade representative Jamieson Greer said Trump is "comfortable" with the current standoff, adding there is "no urgency on our side" to strike a deal.
