Trump disputes the FBI finding that North Korea stole a record $6.3bn from Binance, saying 'I'm not concerned'
The FBI warned that those responsible for the Binance raid are converting stolen funds into Ethereum and laundering them through decentralised finance platforms.Kim Jong Un, whose country's TraderTraitor unit carried out the Binance raid using access gained through a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, according to investigators.
Trump publicly contradicted his own FBI director Kash Patel just hours after the bureau blamed North Korea's elite TraderTraitor hacking unit for the $6.3bn Binance theft, the biggest crypto heist in history. Appearing at a Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday night, Trump told reporters: 'We don't know if it's North Korea. But if it is, we'll talk to North Korea about it.'
TraderTraitor, believed to be part of the Lazarus Group, drained $6.36bn from Binance wallets across ten blockchains in roughly 20 minutes on Thursday.
Binance says it has replenished 90% of stolen assets from company funds and promised customers full reimbursement, though less liquid tokens may take longer to recover.
Investors have already yanked $1bn from the exchange, while crypto-related stocks including Coinbase and Robinhood slid on news of the record breach.
