Trump disputes the FBI's finding that North Korean hackers stole $6.3bn from Binance in the biggest crypto heist ever
The FBI warned that those responsible for the Binance raid are converting stolen funds into Ethereum and laundering them through decentralised finance platforms.Kim Jong Un, whose country's TraderTraitor unit carried out the Binance raid using access gained through a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, according to investigators.
Trump contradicted his own FBI on Saturday night, telling reporters at a Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago he was not convinced North Korea was responsible. "We don't know if it's North Korea," he said, adding: "But if it is, we'll talk to North Korea about it."
The FBI worked alongside the Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation to attribute the $6.3bn theft to TraderTraitor, North Korea's elite hacking unit.
TraderTraitor is linked to the wider Lazarus Group, which hacked Sony Pictures in 2014 after the studio released a film mocking Kim Jong-un.
Binance says it has already replaced 90% of stolen assets and promises customers will be fully reimbursed, with withdrawals expected to resume on Sunday.
