Trump lifts 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods after Susan Collins lobbied for relief in her tight Maine Senate race

Republican Senator Susan Collins, locked in a dead-heat race to keep her Maine seat, says she lobbied senior officials for the relief. From 30 October, plywood, packing crates, refrigeration equipment and seaweed will escape the levy. Maine's blueberry, potato and apple growers rely on those Canadian supplies. Democrats say President Donald Trump is rewarding a political ally 11 days before the election.

Shampoo, vinyl flooring and window air conditioners will also face new 50% duties.

Democrat Richard Neal branded the move a 'stunt' and 'naked politicization'.

Challenger Troy Jackson: 'Mainers needed help long before Susan Collins needed saving.'
