Trump must sit for a deposition in his $10bn BBC lawsuit by 11 December or risk its dismissal, judge rules

BBC lawyer Charles Tobin told a Miami court that President Donald Trump pulled out of an agreed 16 October deposition, claiming a 'matter of national importance' had arisen. Tobin argued that Trump had actually spent the day on the campaign trail in Georgia. 'He was participating in party politics,' Tobin said. The suit centres on a Panorama edit splicing Trump's 6 January 2021 speech, which the BBC has apologised for.

Judge Enjoliqué Lett said it 'strains credulity' that Trump's team searched properly for documents.

Trump's lawyers had offered to sit in January 2027, after discovery closes on 18 December.

Lett ruled that the seven-hour deposition will be videotaped, rejecting a request from Trump's team.
