Trump promises US farmers $8 billion to offset record diesel costs as nervous Republicans fight to hold farm-state seats

Diesel hit a record $6.53 a gallon on September 22, up from $3.62 a year ago, after President Donald Trump launched strikes on Iran on February 28. He unveiled the Harvest Fuel Relief Program at a rally near Wichita, Kansas, 15 days before the November 3 midterms. It is his second farm bailout, after a $12 billion package in December. Payment rates will not be announced until November.

Republican Senator Roger Marshall faces Democrat Adam Hamilton in Kansas, where Democrats last won a Senate seat 94 years ago.

Trump told the Kansas crowd: 'Pretend please that I'm on the ballot.'

Higher fuel costs added $52 to the cost of growing an acre of rice.
