President Trump has been quietly sounding out allies about whether to remove White House chief of staff Susie Wiles from her position, and a number of potential replacements have been mentioned. Reports indicate that Wiles's rivals have been feeding damaging stories about her and her family to the president, and one GOP operative told Trump she has 'burned a lot of people'. Trump angrily rejected the story in a public statement, insisting that Wiles has his 'COMPLETE confidence'.
The names said to be in circulation as possible successors include Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff, Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Bill Pulte, who leads the federal housing agency, and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
The story has emerged with the November 3 midterm elections now fewer than three weeks away, as Republican poll numbers soften amid stubborn inflation and public unease over the Iran war.
Wiles disclosed last month that she had received an all-clear after an earlier breast cancer diagnosis, drawing praise from Trump himself, who called her 'an amazing fighter' — a tribute that sits in sharp contrast to his reported private doubts.
