President Donald Trump claimed in a Monday Truth Social post that the switch would lift home values and cure the state's 'Crooked Elections'. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, called it a 'tired New America bit' and asked what policy failure he was hiding. Senator Ben Ray Luján said the name predates the United States. Trump has no power to rename a state on his own.
Trump first floated the idea in September by posting maps branded 'New America'.
Even a Republican running for Congress in New Mexico dismissed the plan.
