DOJ defends Alaska election lawsuit amid legal challenges, civil liberties pushback and questions over Trump's influence on Justice Department
President Donald Trump has said he ordered the lawsuit himself, telling reporters: "I'm the one that said do it." The suit claims that Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher, entered the Senate race to mislead supporters of Senator Dan Sullivan. Common Cause and the ACLU have now filed to intervene. Democrat Mary Peltola calls the case "a very desperate attempt to cling to power."
The filing warns Alaska must not certify results "tainted" by the second Sullivan's name on the ballot.
Murkowski said Alaska had "already handled this" by clearly distinguishing the two candidates.
Trump called the situation "cheating like hell" at a Florida rally on Friday.
