Trump's DOJ seeks criminal indictment of Cassidy Hutchinson over January 6 testimony to Congress

From the Newshound archive · first published 9 October 2026.

The Justice Department is pursuing a federal criminal indictment of Cassidy Hutchinson, 29, alleging she lied to Congress about Trump's actions on January 6, 2021. Prosecutors from the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, led by Trump ally Harmeet Dhillon, took the case to a federal grand jury in Washington earlier this week. Hutchinson disclosed last month that federal criminal investigators had made her a target. No decision on whether to bring charges has been reached.

Hutchinson's 2022 testimony — that Trump 'lunged' at a Secret Service agent who was driving him away from the Capitol — made national headlines.

Others who had direct knowledge of events inside the presidential vehicle have since disputed her version of the confrontation.

Hutchinson has reportedly not been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury, and prosecutors are expected to put additional evidence before it later this month.
