Trump's Justice Department gives California counties 48 hours to set aside ballots from suspected noncitizen voters

Election officials who refuse 'risk significant federal scrutiny', the letters warn, arriving barely ten days before the 3 November midterms. Bill Essayli, first assistant US attorney for California's Central District, says investigators have confirmed 20,000 noncitizens were mailed ballots, calling that number 'the floor'. The department wants an appeals court to rule this weekend. Essayli has also clashed with Governor Gavin Newsom over safeguards.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin flagged nearly 200,000 possible noncitizen voters back in July.

A federal judge will hear the government's ballot-freezing lawsuit against California next week.
