Trump's Justice Department sues to block Alaska certifying its Senate race if Republican Dan Sullivan loses to Democrat Mary Peltola

Republicans claim that Daniel J. Sullivan — a retired teacher from Petersburg — is a Democratic plant intended to siphon votes from the incumbent. State election officials tried to have him removed from the ballot, but the Alaska Supreme Court put him back on it. The Justice Department suit, filed on Thursday, targets a scenario in which his votes tip the result in Mary Peltola's favour. Peltola leads by roughly two points as early voting gets underway.

President Donald Trump branded the other Sullivan's candidacy a 'scam' and 'CHEATING in an Election'.

The lawsuit claims he entered the race 'with the intention of misleading' the senator's supporters.

He had been a member of the Alaska Independence Party and only registered as a Republican when he filed to run.
