US prosecutors warn California election officials they risk prosecution if they process ballots from suspected noncitizens before the midterms
'We will hold election officials accountable,' First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli warned, branding the knowing processing of noncitizen ballots a federal crime. The Ninth Circuit ordered California to answer the Justice Department's emergency bid by noon on Saturday. Prosecutors want roughly 20,000 mail-in ballots set aside. Los Angeles County has already processed more than 331,000 ballots.
Every California county was given 48 hours to say who on a federal list is a citizen.
Contra Costa clerk Kristin B. Connelly hit back: 'Voters need to vote and not be intimidated.'
Essayli says 20,000 suspected noncitizen ballots is only 'the floor'.
